I guess there is no need to describe what a volume pedal does. Usually that kind of pedal should be placed after the distortion stage (the preamp). Anyway you can get interesting sounds when placing it between the preamp and the guitar when you play distorted sounds. That will result in kinda modulatable distortion.

I have choosen the Ernie Ball pedal because it seems to be very ridgid and there is a chance to repair it with stock parts if the pot is worn out one day.
